The Goldendoodle Dog
Thanks to the great efforts and over all success of experienced Goldendoodle breeders who strive to create the best Goldendoodles possible, they have been able to develop a healthier, more reliable in temperament, marvelous breed in the Goldendoodle dog. The Goldendoodle was incorporated from breeds such as the Golden Retriever, the Poodle and the other great breeds mixed in both purebred dogs from centuries ago. Refined by dog fanciers and coming from top show breeders, our own Goldendoodles have a rich history of Master Hunters, Utility dogs, Companion dogs and Show dogs. The result of this development has created an outstanding hybrid who has far surpassed the purebred dog popularity charts.
The Goldendoodle dog performs many roles in their family setting. We are asked quite often if a Goldendoodle could possibly work out as an excellent gundog. My answer in all honesty? Given the right lineage, I don't see why not. Given a strong lineage in Master Hunting and Utility dogs, Goldendoodles can perform tasks of retrievers, possibly bird dogs and definitely the tasks of being a great water dog. As a loving, giving companion, the Goldendoodle should manifest keen intelligence, boldness, obedience, quickness and possess sensitivity. A lack of these characteristics implicates improper training from the owner not to mention, either poor breeding or poor lineage.
The Golden Retriever and the Poodle rank very high in the charts of intelligent dogs. Both breeds have such a high level of intelligence, a strong need for human companionship, a great hunting instinct that is so strongly innate that owning a Goldendoodle almost guarantees the perfect companion given pawsitive direction and guidance from its owner. A Goldendoodle that is not trained, given a lack of companionship, love or treated unkindly will have the tendency to turn into an unruly dog who may find its way to an animal shelter. Goldendoodles that come from poor breeding; inexperienced breeders who had no concern about the dogs' ancestry or who are not given a great amount of love and concern right from the get-go, are dogs on the path of great destruction.
A lot of people around the world today still opt to own the Goldendoodle dog strictly for companionship. Those who seek canine hunting companions, usually select other breeds such as German Short Haired Pointers or other Retrieving type of dogs simply because of the breed's unfading skills in gunning and hunting. However, our answer to those who question whether a Goldendoodle would make a great hunting dog, is to go ahead and give them the chance providing you ensure with the breeder the doodle has an extensive pedigree of Master Hunters and Utility dogs. We can assure those seeking one of our Goldendoodles for possible use of hunting, that our Goldendoodles have a very strong lineage on both sides regarding this sport. Our Golden Retrievers have distant Pekay lineage and our Poodles pedigrees sport over 400 OFA good champions from Wycliffe, Dassin, Bel Tor and Eaton lines. For those who are not familiar with Pekay Kennels, this kennel began its operation in the early 60s by two women. For many years, they championed some of the best, hardiest Golden Retrievers available in the United States. Their Pekay line is not fraught with hip problems or other debilitating health issues like Gold Rush or other lines. We kept this in mind when we first began searching our founding Golden Retrievers in 1996. While our original Golden Retrievers have passed away of old age, to this day, we do have their ancestors.
When someone purchases one of our Goldendoodles, they can expect our doodle dogs to be reliable, hardy, quick-witted, completely tireless in antics and being a dog that others will always ask you about. We do recommend that those seeking a Goldendoodle for field events or hunting, to purchase a smooth coat Goldendoodle. The reason for this is because their coat will be easier to maintain than that of a shaggy coat or a curly coat. A well-trained Goldendoodle should never indicate dispositions of timidity, fear, over subservience, wariness, un-trainability and most importantly, aggression. We have never owned an aggressive Goldendoodle, nor have we ever created an aggressive Goldendoodle.
Aside from being a commendable companion dog, the Goldendoodle can make an outstanding therapy or assist dog. Around their family, Goldendoodles are loyal, devoted, obedient, sociable and protective by barking. Goldendoodles with a curly coat can be high drive and may have a tendency to bark more than the shaggy coat or smooth coat doodle. The curly coat Goldendoodle may possess a great drive for outdoor sporting activities. This terrific hybrid loves to play with children and likes to be surrounded by humans. Most Goldendoodles tend to be group dogs and enjoy the companionship of other dogs, regardless of breed type.
The body of the Goldendoodle is lean and streamlined and thus, they are very quick when running or playing. This lean machine body is hidden underneath a very long, single fine coat of shaggy or curly hair if a curly coat or a shaggy coat doodle. The smooth coat Goldendoodle most resembles the purebred Golden Retriever, but there are differences in their leg length and coat. The smooth coat Goldendoodle does not possess a facial beard at any time during its life time. The smooth coat Goldendoodle has nice, long legs that makes it a very agile dog. The smooth coat Goldendoodle also does not possess the muscle mass that the Golden Retriever has nor does the smooth coat Goldendoodle possess the high shedding as that of the purebred Golden Retriever. The Goldendoodle's hindquarters are utterly fitted to allow them to turn around rapidly and quite speedily. The doodle's ears are very long and floppy that can be covered with a large amount of hair. Sometimes hair growth inside the ear canal can be a problem for the curly coat Goldendoodle. We do not see this issue too often for the shaggy coat or the smooth coat Goldendoodle. The muzzle of some Goldendoodles is broad, long and powerful enough that it can carry heavy game, but they are considered to be soft mouthed dogs.
Generally, the tail of the Goldendoodle are never docked, although some breeders do dock the tail of doodles who are multi-generation dogs that carry so much Poodle DNA in their structure that they may as well be a Poodle. The Goldendoodle possesses a beautiful plume tail if they are a shaggy or smooth coat doodle. Some curly coat Goldendoodles also possess a plume tail, but most doodles with a curly coat have a long, thin, curly tail that curls over and rides high up over the back. The curled tail is a trait of the Goldendoodle that actually comes from their Poodle lineage. The tail of the Goldendoodle should stay undocked so that their happy expression can be shown by its wag and back and forth movement. Docking tails in European countries is considered illegal and is prohibited. The coat of the smooth coat Goldendoodle is shorter, somewhat flat and single coated. They can have some curls or fluff about their head, ears, neck and they will definitely possess feathering on the back of their legs, underbelly as well as tail. The curly coat Goldendoodle's coat is very similar to a purebred Poodle, although their curls are not tight and the coat can be much softer. The coat of a shaggy Goldendoodle will appear to go in every direction; is a single coat of very fine hairs and they will also sport a facial beard that sprouts out away from their muzzle. The shaggy coat and the smooth coat Goldendoodle sport a plume tail. Goldendoodles do not possess an undercoat. The fact the Goldendoodle's coat is very fine and a single coat, makes them not to be water and temperature resistant. They can chill very easily, so do not be fooled by all their hair. In the winter, the doodle can get frostbite very quickly and can catch a cold quite easily. We recommend a weather resistant canine coat during the winter months.
The most popular color for this hybrid is apricot. Goldendoodles, however, can be of any color and sport any marking on their coat. There are no rare colors or markings for the Goldendoodle dog. Goldendoodles can be black, white, apricot, red, silver, silver frost, chocolate phantome, silver phantom, or be of any solid color with varying markings. Some Goldendoodles may even sport patches of color over a mostly solid light body color. Goldendoodles can even sport "freckles" about their body coat. Regardless of color, the Goldendoodle dog is an interesting hybrid that works out for families of all backgrounds. Interestingly, some color formations of the Goldendoodle allows it to camouflage against trees and bushes during winter season and thus could become a great asset as a hunting dog.
