Discount copies are always welcome especially by business people need copies of various documents all the time. Often these discount copies are bound into book form for distribution at meetings or for training classes. Individuals sometimes have a need for discount copies as well. Putting out flyers about a lost pet is a good reason to need a lot of discount copies. For black and white copying, basically the same toner powder has been used since they were invented. Other features about copiers have changed a great deal, including the ability to load paper on a roll and have it cut off to the size needed rather than having multiple trays of different sizes of paper to feed the copier. Yet, the toner has not changed much because a system was found that works well and which makes it possible to offer discount copies.
Color copiers have changed a great deal since their inception. When the first color copiers were put on the market, commercial printers and copy centers were able to charge premium fees for color copies. Today, things have changed considerably, but color is still slightly more expensive than black and white copying. Here is why.
In order to make color copies, copiers must use a toner cartridge that includes four different colors; cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. Together, these four colors are used in what is known as CMYK or four color process printing. Color copiers work on the same principles. Originals are scanned into a computer, often part of the copier, the colors are broken down into the four colors of toner used, Images are placed on the paper one color at a time with minute dots of color that overlap or lay atop one another in different ways to produce virtually any color imaginable.
Of course, there is one major drawback. Different color images use different amounts of each color to reproduce. This means that a color cartridge could run out of one color of ink/toner much sooner than the others. This cartridge must be treated as empty because it will not provide accurate color copies with a missing color. Regular black cartridges for black and white copying are used until they are completely empty, then replaced or refilled on site.
This is the fundamental difference between color copies and black and white copying. The differences in the ink/toner cartridges make it much less expensive to produce black and white copies than color. This is the reason there is a much better chance of getting discount copies if one orders black and white copying instead of full color.
