Basketball Backboards – Facts You have to Know Before you Get a Backboard
A basketball hoop is a somewhat complicated piece of equipment, so there is a lot to learn. But if you plan on buying a basketball backboard any time soon, there are a few basic facts that you have to be aware of before you dive into buying your goal. The more you learn about basketball systems, the more that you can be guaranteed that you are getting the greatest one for your home and your family.
Rigidity is Most Important - The main driving factor that determines a good basketball backboard over a bad basketball backboard is rigidity. The more rigid a basketball backboard is, the better the rebound it offers, and the more of a pro like feel it has. You can tell you are dealing with a high quality basketball hoop when you bounce a basketball against the backboard and it bouncing right back to you. If you throw a ball against the backboard and it just drops straight down or the entire system shakes wildly, then you aren’t dealing with a high quality system.
Polycarbonate is Better than Acrylic - If you are buying a basketball backboard that is under six hundred dollars or so, you should opt for a polycarbonate model over acrylic when you have the option. Both of these materials are clear, and their rebound is about the same. But the big difference comes in terms of durability. Because polycarbonate is a much stronger material, it can last through a lot more abuse and still be highly playable. This is great if you plant on playing with your basketball goal for years to come.
Thickness Matters - One of the most important factors that goes into the overall durability and rebound of a basketball backboard is thickness. On cheap backboards, the backboard thickness is typically about 2/8 of an inch, mid range hoops typically offer backboards that are 3/8, and the higher end goals are usually ½ inch thick. One half inch thick is also the thickness of backboards used by the NBA.
Glass Backboards don’t Really Break Easily – When people are trying to decide between and acrylic basketball backboard and a glass backboard on a higher end basketball hoop, many people make the mistake of choosing the acrylic board just because they are worried about the glass breaking. The truth is that unless you plan on having a 300 pound NBA center coming over to play hoops with you any time soon, there is very little risk of a glass backboard breaking. In fact, almost all high end hoops have lifetime warranties that protect against breakage with normal basketball use.
